Frequently asked questions

Plans and trial

What is included in Business?

Business includes the complete Web SDK, Server SDK, and AI SDK. The Web SDK embeds Office editing in your product. The Server SDK handles files and collaboration in your own environment. The AI SDK lets agents edit Office content and collaborate with your team.

Does Enterprise limit editing connections or file exports?

During the license term, Enterprise places no license limits on collaborative editing connections or file exports within your authorized domains. Actual capacity and performance depend on your server resources, document complexity, and deployment architecture.

What is the difference between the open-source and commercial editions?

The open-source edition provides core components that can be used commercially under their respective open-source licenses. The commercial edition includes the complete Web SDK, Server SDK, and AI SDK, with features such as charts, pivot tables, Office file conversion, and real-time collaboration.

Do development, testing, and production environments need separate licenses?

Development and testing can use Free Trial without an additional purchase. It provides access to commercial SDK capabilities with watermarks and some feature restrictions. Commercial production deployments require Business or Enterprise. Open-source components remain subject to their own licenses.

Can I test with my own files before purchasing?

Yes. Upload your files to Univer Office to test editing, import, and export. To evaluate collaboration with multiple users, try Univer Workspace.

Which Office file formats are supported, and how compatible are they?

Sheets and Bases import XLS, XLSX, CSV, and TSV, and export XLSX, CSV, and TSV. Docs imports DOC and DOCX, and exports DOCX. Slides imports PPT and PPTX, and exports PPTX. Boards imports Mermaid definitions and exports the current page as PPTX. CSV and TSV exports contain one worksheet or table at a time.

Univer aims to preserve the content and layout of XLSX, DOCX, and PPTX files. Unsupported elements may be dropped during conversion. Test your actual files in Univer Office, including formulas, charts, and layout. For compatibility issues, provide a sanitized file, screenshots, and a description so the team can assess a fix.

Does the AI SDK include a model? Can I connect my own agent?

The AI SDK does not include models or model credits. You can connect your own models, agents, and business systems to build an Office Harness with Univer SDK. Univer CLI and Skills provide integration examples.

Connections and quotas

What is an editing connection?

Only instances participating in collaborative editing count. An instance uses one connection when it first successfully submits a change. Opening a document, read-only access, and editing without collaboration do not count. Each submission resets a two-minute timer. The connection is released after two minutes without a submission, or when the page closes or disconnects. A later submission uses a connection again.

At full capacity, instances that already hold a connection can continue collaborative editing and submitting changes. Only instances that need to acquire or reacquire a connection are affected. Opening documents, read-only access, and non-collaborative editing remain available.

Browser instances that cannot obtain a connection keep changes locally and retry submissions for several minutes. If capacity remains unavailable, those instances switch to offline editing and resume submissions when back online.

When capacity is full, agent instances that cannot acquire or reacquire a connection receive a capacity error. Instances already holding a connection can continue submitting changes. The SDK does not retry failed submissions automatically.

Can I use charts, printing, or file conversion without collaboration?

Yes. Business lets you use Web SDK features such as charts and printing, or Server SDK import and export, without enabling real-time collaboration. Usage without collaboration does not consume editing connections. Imports are unlimited; exports still count against the monthly allowance.

Do agents editing Office content consume connections?

Yes, when participating in collaboration. Each independent instance uses one connection after its first successful submission. Creating or opening a document, read-only access, and editing without collaboration do not count. Operations within an instance that already holds a connection do not consume additional connections, and tool calls are not billed separately.

Each submission resets the two-minute timer. The connection is released after two minutes without a submission, or when the instance closes or disconnects. When capacity is full, agent instances that cannot acquire or reacquire a connection receive a capacity error. Instances already holding a connection can continue submitting changes. The SDK does not retry failed submissions automatically.

How are imports and exports counted?

Imports are unlimited. Documents, spreadsheets, and presentations share the export allowance. Each export conversion successfully completed and recorded by the SDK counts once. Downloading an existing exported file again does not count; converting it again does, even if the content is unchanged.

Conversions that fail or do not pass license checks, and native saves, do not count. Once a conversion has been successfully counted, failures in saving, uploading, or downloading the file do not reverse the count.

Free Trial includes 10 exports per month. Business allowances reset monthly from the license issuance time in UTC and do not roll over, including on annual licenses. When a newly issued license replaces an existing license, including after an upgrade, export usage starts at zero with the full new monthly allowance, and the monthly export cycle restarts from the new license's issuance time. Upgrades keep the original license expiration date. Enterprise has no export-count limit.

When the Business export allowance is exhausted, new export conversions are unavailable until the allowance resets or the license is upgraded; no extra Free Trial allowance is available. Imports, editing, native saves, and collaborative editing connections are unaffected.

Are there limits on developers, end users, or documents?

There are no additional license limits on those counts, and no separate charge based on file size. Actual user capacity, document capacity, and supported file sizes depend on the SDK and your server resources and architecture.

Integration and deployment

Can I use my own backend, authentication, and file storage?

Yes. Univer can integrate with your existing accounts, permissions, business systems, and file storage. The Web SDK can run on its own, with your application handling saves and loading. Collaboration and Office file conversion require the Server SDK.

Can I customize the toolbar, menus, and editor interface?

Yes. The plugin architecture supports custom toolbars, top menus, context menus, business actions, themes, and styles. You can add sidebars, dialogs, cell popovers, and floating components.

Custom components can use React, Vue 3, or Web Components. Angular components can be integrated through Web Components.

Can I generate, edit, and export files on the server?

Yes. Univer supports headless operation in your own Node.js environment. APIs or agents can create and edit Office content, calculate spreadsheets, and run automated workflows. Combine this with Server SDK file conversion to import and export supported formats without opening an editor.

Which collaboration features are included?

The Server SDK provides real-time editing and conflict handling, synchronized cursors and selections, history, and Worktree. Agents can also write and edit documents. Participants can see spreadsheet selections, document cursors and text selections, and presentation pointers and selected objects.

Can I integrate and redistribute Univer as part of my product or open-source project?

The open-source core is licensed under Apache-2.0 and can be integrated into and distributed with your product or open-source project under that license.

Commercial modules can be integrated into your own applications and services, including SaaS, internal systems, Agent services, and desktop or local Office applications. You may distribute or charge for your product under your own brand, subject to the commercial license.

You may provide your application's features through a user interface, APIs, a CLI, or Agent tools such as MCP. Normal customization and plugin development are allowed. You may not sell or sublicense the SDK itself as an independent SDK or development toolkit, including a renamed or repackaged version.

Distribution does not extend domain coverage. One license covers one main domain and all its subdomains at every level; other main domains require separate licenses unless agreed otherwise in writing. For desktop applications without a domain, custom URI schemes, or other special access methods, contact us before deployment to discuss and confirm the license scope and deployment method in writing.

Can one license serve multiple customers?

Yes, for a multi-tenant service using subdomains. One license covers one main domain and all its subdomains at every level. For example, a license for example.com also covers app.example.com, customer1.example.com, and their subdomains.

Business connection and export allowances are shared across all covered domains. Enterprise has no license limits on editing connections or file exports. Domain coverage does not expand the deployment rights of your edition.

Deployments on other main domains, including customer-hosted deployments, require separate licenses unless otherwise agreed in writing.

Can I change a license after deployment details change?

The main domain generally cannot be changed after license issuance. Exceptional changes require our prior written approval. License capacity and validity cannot be edited manually.

Does a self-hosted deployment need to connect to Univer cloud services?

No. Univer can run entirely in your own environment without internet access. Commercial licenses are configured and validated locally, with no online license verification or telemetry reporting at runtime. Document processing and data storage stay in your environment.

A separate license compliance review may be requested in writing, using only necessary information you provide about your authorized domains or agreed application and deployment scope, deployment details, and usage summaries where your license has the relevant limits. No remote system access, document contents, or unrelated information is required.

How should I deploy Univer, and what server configuration do I need?

We recommend starting with the following configurations, with collaboration and import/export services on separate servers:

How should I deploy Univer, and what server configuration do I need?
Concurrent editing connectionsImport/export serviceCollaboration service
2501 server · 4 cores / 8 GB RAM1 server · 4 cores / 8 GB RAM
5001 server · 4 cores / 8 GB RAM1 server · 8 cores / 16 GB RAM

One Business license permits one server-side deployment instance of the collaboration service and one of the file import/export service. These instances may run on the same server or on two separate servers. Server deployment instances and collaborative editing connections are counted separately.

You choose and manage your database architecture, node count, backups, and disaster recovery. These are not subject to the service instance or server limits above.

The reference workload is a spreadsheet with about 10,000 populated cells, 10% of which contain formulas. Validate the configuration with your actual files and editing activity, including PPTX and DOCX files.

Multi-instance scaling, load balancing, or automatic failover for either service requires Enterprise. Contact us about the official distributed deployment option for your concurrency and availability requirements.

Purchasing and support

How do I upgrade as usage grows?

Upgrades are prorated for the remaining license term and keep the original expiration date. Export usage resets to zero with the full upgraded monthly allowance, and the monthly export cycle restarts from the new license's issuance time in UTC. Download, replace, and reload the license after payment for the new entitlements to take effect.

Contact us for older or custom licenses and capacity above 500 connections.

How do renewals work, and which price applies?

Renewals keep the current connection tier and offer terms of 1–12 months at the prices in effect when you renew. Terms of 1–11 months use the monthly price; a 12-month term uses the annual price. Licenses do not renew automatically.

You can renew whenever 60 days or fewer remain, or at any time after expiry. An active license extends from its existing expiration date. An expired license starts a new term on the date you complete your purchase. Download and replace the license after payment. For Business, when a newly issued license replaces the previous license, export usage starts at zero with the full monthly allowance, and the monthly export cycle restarts from the new license's issuance time.

For Business, advanced support is purchased and renewed separately. You can add it when renewing your license. Enterprise renewals include advanced support at no additional charge.

What happens to a deployed product if the license expires?

The SDK returns to Free Trial: watermarks, up to 3 collaborative editing connections, 10 exports per month, and the trial feature limits. Documents remain in your environment. Continued commercial production use requires renewal and replacement of the license.

Free Trial export allowances continue to reset on their own monthly cycle. Commercial license expiry does not trigger an additional reset.

What technical support is available?

Business includes standard support; advanced support is a paid add-on. Enterprise includes advanced support at no additional charge. Standard support is provided by email and ticket; advanced support also includes a dedicated Discord group and priority handling.

Support hours are on business days, excluding statutory public holidays. Response times do not guarantee resolution times.

With advanced support, the Univer technical team will provide an assessment of feature requests and improvement suggestions within 3 business days. Implementation dates are not guaranteed.

Support covers the SDK, official examples, and API usage. Your application code, infrastructure, and third-party components are excluded.

Which version updates are included during the license term, and who handles upgrades?

Your license includes major releases, minor releases, and patches officially released for your licensed products during the license term. Advanced support is not required to receive these updates. You are responsible for scheduling and carrying out upgrades and deployment.

Minor releases and patches within the same major version maintain backward compatibility for publicly documented stable APIs. Major releases may require changes to your integration; release notes explain the impact and migration steps. Preview and experimental APIs are excluded, and critical security fixes may require incompatible changes disclosed in the release notes.

How are bug fixes and security updates delivered?

Bug fixes and security updates are delivered through subsequent official releases, with security fixes prioritized according to severity and release planning. You are responsible for upgrading and deploying the updated SDK.

Changes to maintenance coverage for major versions will be announced in advance through official channels.

Can I use Univer for personal or non-commercial projects?

Open-source components can be used for free under their respective licenses. Free Trial is available to evaluate commercial SDK capabilities. Personal or non-commercial use does not automatically remove commercial feature restrictions.

Do you offer discounts for schools or educational projects?

Schools and educational projects can contact us with their project purpose and expected usage. We review education discount requests individually.

Do you offer discounts for nonprofit or civil society organizations?

We currently do not offer discounts based solely on nonprofit or civil society status. Schools and educational projects can contact us to discuss education discounts.

Can I request a refund, invoice, or purchase contract?

Complete your evaluation with Free Trial before purchasing. For online purchases, a license is issued immediately after successful payment. License fees are non-refundable once the license is issued, except as required by applicable law or otherwise agreed in writing. This policy does not exclude our liability for breach of contract.

Cancellation and refunds for separately purchased support and custom services follow their service order or written agreement. Contact us about duplicate charges or a payment for which no license was issued so we can investigate.

Contact us before payment to confirm invoices, taxes, contract purchasing, or other payment requirements.

Open-source and Pro scope
Free Trial feature limits

Free Trial includes watermarks and the following limits.

Free Trial limits
Product or featureFree Trial limit
Editing connectionsUp to 3 collaborative instances. A connection is used on the first successful submission and released after 2 minutes without a submission. Opening, read-only access, and non-collaborative editing do not count.
Imports and exportsUnlimited imports and 10 exports per month. The allowance resets monthly and does not roll over.
Sheets pivot tablesOne pivot table per workbook, across all worksheets.
Sheets chartsLine, column, and bar charts only. The number of charts is not limited.
Docs, Slides, and Boards chartsNew charts cannot be added, and chart types cannot be changed.
Sheets sparklinesSparklines cannot be added or modified.
Bases dashboardsDashboards cannot be created.
Sheets printingThe first 3 pages per print.
Docs, Slides, Boards, and PDFs printingThe first page per print.

These limits apply without a commercial license. A dedicated local license follows its own terms. Sheets and Docs printing have local development exceptions on localhost and 127.0.0.1.

Trial terms

Free Trial features and allowances follow the current SDK and the applicable license.

The localhost-only free license permits local use of the software and does not allow commercial use. Choose a commercial license for deployment on a commercial domain.

Editing connection rules

Connections count collaborative editing instances, rather than registered users or documents.

When a connection is used

  • An instance uses one connection on its first successful submission. Opening a document, read-only access, and editing without collaboration do not count.
  • Every submission resets a two-minute timer. The connection is released after two minutes without a submission, or when the page closes or disconnects.
  • A later submission uses a connection again. People and agents share the same license allowance; agent operations within an instance already counted do not add connections or tool-call charges.

When editing connection capacity is full

At full capacity, instances that already hold a connection can continue collaborative editing and submitting changes. Only instances that need to acquire or reacquire a connection are affected. Opening documents, read-only access, and non-collaborative editing remain available.

Browser instances that cannot obtain a connection keep changes locally and retry submissions for several minutes. If capacity remains unavailable, those instances switch to offline editing and resume submissions when back online.

Your integration can query connection limits and usage to show a waiting status or set only affected instances to read-only mode. Clearly distinguish locally saved changes from changes submitted to the server.

When an agent cannot obtain capacity

When capacity is full, agent instances that cannot acquire or reacquire a connection receive a capacity error. Instances already holding a connection can continue submitting changes. The SDK does not retry failed submissions automatically.

Connection counting examples
ScenarioConnections used
Editing without collaboration0
Document opened, with no changes submitted0
One instance submits its first change successfully1
One person holds three active editing instances3
Ten people submit changes to the same document10
Two instances on the same page submit changes2

Imports are unlimited. Connection capacity and monthly export allowances are independent. Reaching the connection limit does not restrict imports or exports; exhausting the export allowance does not affect editing connections, imports, or native saves.
